John is known for being a very practical person and he has bags of enthusiasm for the subject of EMC.  He is the owner and editor of the EMC Journal.

He started his working career at 16 years old with a 4 year apprenticeship at British Steel, and he attended college where he gained an ONC and HNC in electronics. He then studied for a degree in electronics at Salford University. John worked as a design engineer of sonar sea-bed mapping equipment and he also spent some time as a teacher.

This sums up John’s earlier career but for over 20 years John has worked in commercial EMC testing where he has helped thousands of products achieve EMC compliance. He has worked for ERA Technology, Chase EMC, Intertek Testing Services and Polycom (UK) Ltd and has been instrumental in building several EMC laboratories, all of which were UKAS accredited or attained UKAS accreditation.

For the last seven years of his EMC testing experience John was the Managing Director of Blackwood Labs, a multi award winning company and the only company in Wales ever to achieve Notified Body status for the new EMC Directive and Competent Body status under the old EMC Directive.

John is a member of the EMCIA, the EMCTLA Secretary and he sits on the three main British Standards EMC committees). Since 2006 John has represented the UK and has been appointed as an international expert in several working groups within CISPR Sub Committee I, where he has been actively involved in the creation of the multimedia EMC standards, CISPR 32 and CISPR 35. These standards are intended to cover an enormous scope of products.

John has written and presented many technical papers on various EMC topics. He created a methodology for dealing with problems associated with the immunity testing of telecommunications equipment to EN 55024. John’s work was adopted by Cenelec as the official interpretation to the European Standard.

John set up EMC Goggles, a unique training seminar intended to pass on the knowledge and experiences that he has learnt over the last 20 years, giving away the techniques that he has learnt and based on the training he has given to many EMC test engineers. EMC Goggles aims to dispel the myth that EMC is a “black art”. EMC Goggles has earned extremely positive testimonials from its attendees both in the UK and in the USA.
